To know the basic functions of the translator interpreter of LGP and to promote the acquisition of basic theoretical and practical knowledge.
To understand the role of the Portuguese sign language interpreter as a mediator of communication
between two communities with different languages and cultures: the sign language of the deaf community and the oral language of the listener community.
To promote the introduction of the students to the context of mediation, starting his/ her preparation for
the performance of these functions
Deaf community – institutions and functioning; milestones in the history of the deaf community; relevant
legislation; basics of translation and interpretation in general and in the context of LGP specifically;
consecutive translation and simultaneous translation; theoretical models of translation and interpretationusing the Colonomos model; gloss – its importance and usefulness; gloss – theoretical and practical aspects; importance of the NMA in LGP; translation contexts and interpretation; practical exercises of translation and interpretation.
The themes addressed in this UC are intended to familiarize the students with the basic concepts of
translation and interpretation in General and in the context of the LGP in particular, as well as develop their knowledge of the deaf community. Knowledge about the structure, organization and functioning of the deaf community helps to familiarize the students with their future work context. On the other hand, practical translation and interpretation exercises incorporate the theoretical concepts discussed and facilitate the development of knowledge of the working languages.
Theoretical approach: themes; distribution of documentation; theme-oriented research; presentation of
topics related to the post content research students; discussion and debate. Practical approach: practical
exercises of initiation to the interpretation and translation; translation exercises in LGP; audio and video
recordings and their analysis and correction; compilation of glosses and correction tapes.
The articulation between the theoretical approach and practical approach aims to encourage the active and engaged participation of the students, which is essential for the progress of the subject and for achieving success in the ratings. As well as class participation, guided research, completion of the tasks set by the teacher, this articulation promotes participation in extracurricular activities which will enhance the knowledge gained in the classroom (seminars, meetings, conferences and events related to the deaf community).
Theoretical evaluation (theoretical work/test) – 30%
Practical evaluation (1/2 practical work of translation for LGP - audiovisual recording and gloss) – 60%
Participation; Attendance – 5%
Autonomous work; Homework – 5%
